Your driveway and paths are the first thing visitors see when they arrive at your property. They’re also the surfaces that take the most punishment — tyre marks, oil drips, moss, leaf stains and general grime build up year after year until the concrete or pavers look permanently grey. The good news is that water blasting, done correctly, can restore almost any hard surface to near-new condition. This guide covers everything Auckland homeowners need to know.
Know Your Surface First
Not all hard surfaces are created equal, and the single biggest mistake people make is treating them all the same. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Concrete (smooth/troweled): Hard and durable. Can handle 2,500–3,500 PSI. Great candidate for water blasting.
- Exposed aggregate: Very durable but the exposed stones can be dislodged if the pressure is too aggressive or the nozzle too close. 2,000–3,000 PSI with a wider fan tip.
- Clay brick pavers: Medium hardness. 1,500–2,500 PSI. Too much pressure can chip brick faces and blow out the sand between joints.
- Concrete pavers: Similar to brick but slightly harder. 2,000–2,800 PSI.
- Natural stone (slate, bluestone): Variable hardness. Softer stones need lower pressure (1,000–1,500 PSI) and care around jointing.
- Asphalt: Surprisingly soft. Should NOT be high-pressure blasted — it will strip the bitumen binder. Low pressure and chemical treatment only.

The Stain Treatment Hierarchy
Different stains need different approaches. Here’s how we handle the most common ones:
Oil and Tyre Marks
Oil stains are the toughest to remove because they penetrate porous concrete. A pre-treatment with a degreaser or sodium hydroxide-based cleaner, left to dwell for 10–15 minutes, lifts the oil toward the surface so the pressure wash can flush it out. Fresh stains come out easily; old, set-in stains may lighten but not fully disappear. That’s why we always pre-treat oil before blasting — just hitting it with pressure alone drives it deeper.
Moss, Mould and Algae
Auckland’s damp climate means moss and algae are the most common problem on driveways and paths, especially in shaded areas. A sodium hypochlorite or commercial biocide pre-treatment kills the growth at the root, then the pressure wash removes the dead matter. Without the pre-treatment, the moss will regrow within weeks.
Rust and Tannin Stains
Rust from fertiliser, rebar or metal furniture, and tannin stains from leaves and gum nuts, need specialised chemical cleaners — usually oxalic acid-based. These are applied, left to dwell, and then rinsed. Pressure alone won’t touch them.
General Grime and Dirt
This is the easy one. Standard pressure washing with a surface cleaner attachment (a flat, round tool that spins two nozzles) will strip built-up dirt and restore the original colour in a single pass. This is where professional equipment really shines — commercial surface cleaners are much faster and more even than a wand.
Why Pre-Treatment Matters
We always pre-treat before we blast. It’s the difference between a clean that lasts 12 months and one that lasts 12 weeks. Pre-treatment kills organic growth, lifts oil toward the surface, and breaks down chemical staining so the pressure wash can flush it away rather than driving it deeper into the surface. It adds 30–45 minutes to the job but the results are dramatically better.
To Seal or Not to Seal?
After water blasting, sealing is the single best way to keep your driveway and paths looking good for longer. A quality concrete sealer fills the micro-pores in the surface, making it harder for oil, moss and dirt to bond. Sealed surfaces stay cleaner for 2–3 times longer than unsealed ones and are much easier to clean when the time comes.

DIY vs Professional: The Real Difference
A hire pressure washer from the local hardware store will typically produce 2,000–3,000 PSI with a wand (no surface cleaner). That’s enough power to clean a driveway, but there are real trade-offs:
- Speed: A commercial surface cleaner covers 3–4 times the area per hour compared to a wand. What takes a pro 2 hours takes a DIYer all day.
- Evenness: Wands leave zebra-stripe patterns (clean/dark bands) because the spray pattern is narrow. Surface cleaners give a uniform clean.
- Pre-treatment: Most DIYers skip this step, which means stains don’t fully come out and regrowth is faster.
- Water volume: Commercial machines push more litres per minute, which flushes lifted grime away rather than just moving it around.
- Damage risk: Without surface knowledge, it’s easy to blow out paver joints, etch concrete or damage softer surfaces.
How Often Should You Water Blast?
For most Auckland properties, every 18–24 months keeps hard surfaces looking good. Shaded paths with heavy moss growth may need annual attention. If you seal after cleaning, you can stretch that out further. The best time is spring or early summer — the surface dries faster, and you’ll get maximum benefit through the entertaining season.
